How to Maintain Leather Bags
October 24, 2026

Got yourself a new leather bag or wallet? Leather rewards a little care: treated well, it lasts for years and looks better with age. Here are the do's and don'ts that make the difference.
1. Don't sit on your wallet or pile things on it
A leather wallet in a back pocket, or a bag squashed under heavier things, slowly loses its shape and creases at the folds. Keep wallets in a front pocket or in your bag, and store leather goods where nothing heavy presses on them.
2. Don't overfill your bag
Whether it is a leather duffel or a soft handbag, stuffing it too full stretches the leather and strains the seams, and that damage cannot be undone. Carry what the bag was made for.
3. Skip the plastic
Plastic bags do not breathe. Leather stored in plastic can trap moisture and develop mold. Store your bag in a breathable cotton dust bag, or in a well-ventilated closet.
4. Keep it out of strong sun and heat
Like our skin, leather dries out and wrinkles with too much sun. And never dry wet leather with a heater or hair dryer: let it dry slowly at room temperature, even if it takes longer.
5. Clean it regularly
Leather absorbs dirt, and over time that dirt breaks it down. Wipe your bag with a soft, slightly damp cloth and let it dry on its own. For deeper cleaning, use a cleaner made for leather; household cleaners can damage it.
6. Moisturize it
Leather needs moisture to stay supple and avoid cracks. Apply a small amount of a good leather conditioner every few months, and test it on a hidden spot first.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I condition a leather bag?
Every few months is enough for most bags, more often if you live somewhere very dry or the bag gets wet often. Always test the conditioner on a hidden spot first.
How do I dry a wet leather bag?
Blot off the water, stuff the bag loosely with paper to keep its shape and let it dry slowly at room temperature. Avoid heaters and hair dryers, which can crack the leather.
