Travel bags are measured in liters, not inches: 27 liters for a weekend, 40 to 56 liters for a week, and 77 to 80 liters for a long trip or sports gear. After volume come two decisions: do you need wheels (handy at the airport, but they add weight), and should the bag fold away for storage when not in use. How many liters do you really need?
For a weekend or two nights, a 27 to 40 liter bag is enough, and it usually fits carry-on dimensions too. For a week away most people are comfortable with 56 liters, and for a long trip, a family or bulky sports gear, 77 to 80 liters. Rule of thumb: you have to carry a full travel bag yourself up the stairs, and a bag that's too big always gets filled and hits the airline's weight limit.
Wheels, foldable or a classic duffel?
A wheeled travel bag saves your shoulder at the airport and train station, but adds about 1 to 2 kg (2 to 4 lb) and a handle system that takes up inside space. A classic duffel is lighter and squeezes better into a car trunk. A foldable bag is for something else entirely: it stays folded to pocket size for most of the trip and opens into an extra bag for shopping or the trip home. How many liters do I need for a week away?
About 56 liters is enough for a week for most people: room for 5 to 7 changes of clothes, extra shoes and a toiletry kit. If you're heading somewhere cold and packing bulky layers, or carrying sports gear, 77 to 80 liters is better. For a weekend, 27 to 40 liters will do.
Are there wheeled travel bags?

What is a foldable bag and who is it for?
A foldable bag packs down small enough to fit inside your suitcase and opens into a full travel bag when needed. It's ideal if you come home with more than you left with, like shopping, gifts or gear, and if you want a backup bag without giving up packing space. It doesn't replace a main bag: the fabric is thinner and it has no rigid structure.
What is Cordura fabric and why does it matter?
Cordura is a tightly woven nylon fabric developed for military and industrial use, far more abrasion and tear resistant than regular nylon. On a travel bag that means corners and a base that don't wear through after dozens of flights on baggage belts. This collection has several Cordura models from 20 to 32 inches.
Is a travel bag carry-on or checked luggage?
It depends on the volume. A 27 to 40 liter bag usually meets common carry-on dimensions (around 55 x 40 x 23 cm, or 22 x 16 x 9 in) and fits in the cabin. Bags of 56 liters and up are meant for the hold. Remember that a soft bag bulges when full: what fits the sizer empty won't necessarily fit packed.
