How do you choose a suitcase? Three things decide it: size (a carry-on about 55 cm or 22 in tall, a 24 to 26 inch medium, or a 28 to 32 inch large for the hold), empty weight (a lighter suitcase leaves more of the typical 23 kg / 50 lb allowance for your clothes), and material: a hard shell protects the contents better, while soft fabric is more forgiving when you squeeze in more. Camel Mountain suitcases roll on quiet wheels and are backed by our warranty.
Which suitcase size is right for you?
For a weekend or 2 to 4 days, a carry-on (about 40 liters) is enough. For a week away most travelers choose 24 to 26 inches (60 to 75 liters), and for a long trip or a family, 28 to 32 inches. Check your airline's limits: the common carry-on size is around 55 x 40 x 23 cm (22 x 16 x 9 in), and checked bags are usually limited to 23 kg (50 lb).
Hardside or softside? Lightweight or electric?
A hardside suitcase (polycarbonate, polypropylene or aluminum) resists water and knocks and is recommended for delicate items; a softside suitcase is lighter and more flexible to pack. Frequent flyers benefit from a lightweight suitcase (3 to 4 kg, about 7 to 9 lb, in a medium size), and if you want something different there are ride-on electric suitcases too. The kids won't want to get off.
Frequently asked questions
What size suitcase can I take on the plane?
Most airlines allow a carry-on up to about 55 x 40 x 23 cm (22 x 16 x 9 in) weighing 7 to 10 kg (15 to 22 lb). Low-cost airlines like Wizz Air and Ryanair have smaller limits, so check before you fly. All our 20-inch carry-ons fit the standard dimensions.
How much does a good suitcase weigh?
A quality medium suitcase weighs 3 to 4.5 kg (6.6 to 10 lb), and a light carry-on 2.5 to 3.5 kg (5.5 to 7.7 lb). Every 100 g saved on the suitcase goes to your clothes, which matters within a 23 kg limit.
Which is better, hardside or softside?
Hardside protects the contents better, resists rain and is easy to clean, the most popular choice for flying. Softside is more forgiving when you squeeze in a little more, usually lighter, and sometimes has a handy outside pocket. If most of your trips involve flying, go hardside.
Are the suitcases covered by a warranty?
Yes. Camel Mountain suitcases are backed by our warranty on the shell and the mechanisms, and our service team can help with replacement wheels and handles.
Do I need a TSA lock on my suitcase?
A TSA lock matters mainly on flights to and within the US: it lets airport security open the suitcase without breaking the lock. Some of our models have a built-in TSA lock, and you can add an external TSA lock to any suitcase from our travel accessories.
