Vacuum bags solve two problems in every small home: a closet that fills up with comforters and winter clothes, and a suitcase that only closes when you sit on it. Fill it, seal it, remove the air, and a comforter that took a whole shelf becomes a flat package. You'll find three types: flat clear bags in every size with a choice of pump, 3D bags that compress without a pump, and travel sets with a rechargeable electric pump.
Which type of vacuum bag is right for you?
A flat bag with a valve and pump gives the strongest compression and slides under the bed and into a suitcase. A cube-shaped 3D bag stacks steadily on a shelf and compresses by pressing with your hands, no pump needed, so it's the easiest for the closet. A travel set comes in sizes that fit a carry-on and with a small electric pump, so you can compress again on the way home from the hotel.
How to choose a size
A 40 x 60 cm bag holds a few sweaters or two light down jackets. A summer comforter fits a 50 x 70 cm bag, a thick comforter a 60 x 80 or 70 x 100 cm bag, and a double down comforter sizes of 80 x 100 cm and up. In a suitcase, several medium bags are better than one large one: easier to arrange and to find things.
Why vacuum bags fill with air, and how to prevent it
The culprit is almost always a zipper that isn't closed all the way, or a thread or crumb caught in it. Close it slowly along its full length, run the sealing clip over it a few times, and don't fill the bag up to the zipper. After pumping, screw the valve cap on firmly. A double zipper and a screw-cap valve, as on our bags, are what separate a bag that holds for months from one that puffs up after a week.
Changing seasons without the mess
At the end of winter, wash and thoroughly dry comforters and sweaters, compress them into bags and store them on the top shelf, under the bed or in the attic. The bag is sealed against moisture, dust and odors, and in the fall you open the zipper and everything returns to its full size. Clear bags save you searching: you see what's in each one without opening it.
Frequently asked questions
How much space do vacuum bags really save?
According to manufacturers, up to 75% to 80% of the volume. The biggest savings are on down comforters, coats and sweaters, which hold a lot of air. Thin clothes shrink less.
Do I need a pump to use vacuum bags?
It depends on the type. 3D bags with a one-way valve compress by pressing with your hands. Flat bags need a pump: manual, corded electric or rechargeable. Our travel sets already include the electric pump.
Does a vacuum bag reduce suitcase weight?
No. Vacuum frees up space, not weight, so weigh your suitcase before you fly, especially on flights with a weight limit.
Can I store things in vacuum bags long term?
Yes, when the clothes are completely dry and the bag is sealed well. Down coats and comforters return to their full size when you open the zipper, sometimes after a shake or a few hours hanging.
Are the bags reusable?
Yes. Open the zipper, take out the contents, and you can fill and compress them again next season or on your next trip.
