Rain on the way to work shouldn't reach your laptop. A water resistant backpack keeps your laptop, documents and clothes dry, and most backpacks on this page are made of water-repellent fabric such as Oxford, nylon or 1680D ballistic Cordura that stops light rain and splashes. For heavy rain and hiking there are models with a rain cover, like The Xavier Pro, The Coach Pro, Roxy and Slayer 80L, and Urbanism Deluxe is made of fully water resistant nylon. You'll find backpacks with compartments for laptops up to 16 inches and large packs for the outdoors.

Water-repellent, water resistant and waterproof: the difference

Water-repellent fabric is coated so water beads and runs off, and it handles light rain and splashes. A fully waterproof bag is sealed, with sealed zippers and seams, and suits boating and water sports. Backpacks for the city, work and hiking are usually water-repellent: the fabric stops the rain, but in heavy, prolonged rain water can get in through the zippers and seams. So use a rain cover in heavy rain, and always keep your laptop in its padded compartment.

A rain cover for wet days and the outdoors

A rain cover stretches over the whole bag from the outside and adds a layer of protection. On The Xavier Pro it's built into the bag, and The Coach Pro, Roxy and Slayer 80L come with their own cover. The Xavier Pro, The Coach Pro and Roxy are made of 1680D ballistic Cordura, an especially thick and tough fabric. For the outdoors, Slayer 80L is made of water-repellent ballistic nylon, and XL Mountaineer of rip and water resistant fabric.

Caring for a water resistant backpack

After rain, wipe the bag with a cloth, open the zippers and let it air-dry away from heaters and direct heat. Clean stains with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, without scrubbing hard, so you don't damage the coating. Leather backpacks, like The Mulhens and The Vintage Pro, should be wiped and dried at room temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Is a water resistant backpack waterproof?

Not exactly. Most backpacks are made of water-repellent fabric that handles rain and splashes, but they aren't sealed for submersion. For heavy rain, choose a backpack that comes with a rain cover, like The Xavier Pro or Roxy.

Will my laptop stay dry in the rain?

In light rain the water-repellent fabric stops most of the water, and the laptop sits in a separate padded compartment inside. In heavy or prolonged rain, a backpack with a rain cover is the safer choice.

Is there a backpack with a rain cover?

Yes. The Xavier Pro has a built-in rain cover, and The Coach Pro, Roxy and Slayer 80L come with their own.

What fabric are water resistant backpacks made of?

Mainly water-repellent Oxford, nylon and polyester, 1680D ballistic Cordura on models like The Xavier Pro and Roxy, and fully water resistant nylon on Urbanism Deluxe.

Is there a water resistant leather backpack?

The Mulhens, in water resistant genuine leather, protects your gear from rain, and The Vintage Pro, in crazy horse leather, resists water and shocks. Leather still needs wiping and drying after rain.

Is there a water resistant hiking pack?

Yes. Slayer 80L is made of water-repellent ballistic nylon and comes with a rain cover, and XL Mountaineer is made of 1680D ballistic nylon that resists rips and water.
