A vacuum backpack has a sealed compression compartment: you pack your clothes, close it and draw the air out through a valve with a pump. The clothes shrink and leave room for more gear, without moving up to a bigger bag. On our models the compression saves up to about half the volume of your clothes, depending on the model and the fabrics. Want the pump in the box? Korvinor Supreme has a built-in electric air pump, so no external pump is needed, and Orion comes with a rechargeable electric pump; Electron does not include a pump. Every backpack here has a padded laptop compartment for a 16 to 17 inch laptop.
How does a vacuum backpack work?
Inside the bag there is a sealed compartment or bag with a valve. Pack soft items such as shirts, pants, sweaters and towels, close the compartment and attach a pump to the valve. The pump draws the air out and the clothes compress into a thin layer. Shoes, chargers and your laptop don't compress, so they go in the backpack's other compartments.
Rechargeable, built-in or your own pump
Orion comes with a small rechargeable electric air pump that connects to the valve inside the bag. On Korvinor the pump is built into the backpack and works on the sealed bag in its own compartment. On Electron the compartment and valve are built in but the pump is not included, so you need a portable air pump of your own. Each model's page says whether a pump is included.
Flying with a vacuum backpack
Vacuum compression makes your clothes smaller, not the outside of the bag. Airlines go by the bag's dimensions and weight, so check your airline's limits and remember that the bag grows when expanded. Orion, for example, measures 47.5 x 31 x 16 cm (about 18.7 x 12.2 x 6.3 in) unexpanded, within the carry-on limits of most airlines, and its side handle has a built-in digital scale so you don't go over the weight limit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a vacuum backpack on a plane?
Yes, as long as you check the dimensions. Compression shrinks your clothes and frees up space, but the airline measures the bag from the outside. Unexpanded, these backpacks usually fit carry-on limits. On budget fares that allow only a personal item under the seat, check the exact size first.
Does a vacuum backpack come with a pump?
It depends on the model: Korvinor Supreme has a built-in electric air pump, so you don't need an external pump; Orion includes a rechargeable electric pump; Electron does not include a pump. Each model's page says whether a pump is included.
How much space does vacuum compression save?
On our models, up to about half the volume of your clothes, depending on the model and the fabrics. Shirts, pants, sweaters and towels compress well. Shoes, books and devices don't, so they go in the other compartments.
Will my clothes wrinkle when compressed?
Clothes that are neatly folded or rolled before compression come out with hardly any wrinkles. Items that crease easily, like a button-down shirt, are best folded carefully or packed in the regular compartment.
What size laptop fits in a vacuum backpack?
Every model has a padded laptop compartment: up to 16 inches on Orion and Korvinor, and up to 17 inches on Electron. The laptop size is in each model's name.
