Can You Bring Your Own Food on a Plane?

October 24, 2026

Flying can be stressful, and many of us cope with a snack or two. But what if your favorite food is not allowed through security and you are left with whatever is served on board? The good news: in most cases you can bring your own food. Here is what usually passes and what to watch out for. Rules vary by country and airport and change over time, so always check the latest rules for your airport and destination before you fly.

What food can you bring through security?

Passenger eating a meal on board a plane

Solid food is generally allowed in your carry-on. In the US, for example, the TSA allows solid foods such as:

  • Sandwiches, wraps and cooked meals
  • Chips, crackers, cookies and candy
  • Solid cheese
  • Fruit, vegetables and nuts
  • Coffee beans, tea and dry spices

Security may ask you to take food out of your bag for screening, so pack it near the top in a clear bag or container.

What counts as a liquid?

Anything you can pour, spread, spray or pump usually counts as a liquid: yogurt, honey, jam, hummus, peanut butter, sauces, soups and drinks. Many airports limit these to small containers, commonly 100 ml (3.4 oz) each, packed in one clear bag. Larger amounts go in checked luggage. Some airports with newer scanners have relaxed these limits, but do not count on it at both ends of your trip.

Alcohol

Small bottles within the liquid limits can usually pass security, but most airlines do not allow you to drink your own alcohol on board. Pack bottles in checked luggage instead, and check limits on alcohol content and quantity.

Watch out at your destination

Passing security is only half the story. Many countries restrict bringing in fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy, and some fine travelers for undeclared food. Eat it on the plane or leave it behind, and declare anything you are unsure about.

For official US guidance, see the TSA's What Can I Bring? food list. Other countries publish similar lists.
