Practical features

Outdoor trips are about reconnecting with nature, but most of us still bring a phone for photos and maps, and maybe a headlamp. An outdoor backpack stays with you the whole journey. It should help you, not feel like dead weight. Look for padded shoulder straps, a breathable back and a fabric that is light for its strength.

Weather resistance

The more hikes you take, the more your bag is exposed to sun, rain and dirt. Over time that wears out colors and weakens fabric. Water-repellent, weather-resistant materials slow that process down, so your pack keeps its looks and strength for longer. For long days in heavy rain, add a rain cover.
