Men's Pouch: How to Choose the Size, Carry Style and Material

October 23, 2026

Choose a men's pouch first by what goes into it every day: a pouch of about 1.5 liters is enough for a phone, wallet and keys, a pouch of about 2 liters adds room for a small tablet like an iPad mini, and 4 liters also holds a tablet, charger and cables. After the capacity, decide how you carry it (waist, chest or shoulder) and what it is made of, depending on the city, your work or the flight.

How big should the pouch be?

The common mistake is buying on looks and then finding the phone won't fit with the zipper closed, or the pouch sits empty and flaps around. Lay out on the table what you carry on a normal day and choose by that:

CapacityWhat fits comfortablyExample from the catalog
About 1.5 LPhone, wallet, keys, earbudsScarlett in canvas, 14×21×5 cm
About 2 LAll of the above plus a small tablet up to 7.9"The Amp Quantum, 26×15×8 cm, 360 g
4 LTablet, charger, cables, folded documentsCityScape Evolve, 33×15×10 cm, 550 g

Rule of thumb: if you are adding a water bottle or an umbrella, you are already looking for a men's shoulder bag, not a pouch. A good pouch sits close to the body and doesn't bulge.

Waist, chest or shoulder: how to carry a pouch

  • On the waist: the most freedom of movement, good for walking, cycling and festivals. Suits small, flat pouches.
  • Crossbody on the chest: the pouch sits in front, where you can see it, with the zipper within reach. This is the choice for public transport, markets and the airport, because it is hard to open without you noticing.
  • On the shoulder or back: comfortable for a larger pouch of 3 to 4 liters that holds a tablet.

Many models work both ways with one adjustable strap, for example Scarlett, which you can wear on the waist or crossbody. If you are tall, check that the strap adjusts to its full length. We explained the small details, like buckle height and strap length, in the guide to wearing a pouch.

Which material: canvas, water-resistant fabric or leather

Canvas gives an everyday vintage look, feels pleasant to the touch and resists wear. It suits the city and vacations, less so heavy rain.

Water-resistant or water-repellent synthetic fabric (Oxford, polyester, nylon) is lighter and keeps your phone and documents dry in light rain and splashes. This is the material for work, flights and winter. Note the difference: "water-repellent" and "water-resistant" protect from light rain, not from being submerged.

Genuine leather looks more serious in meetings and gets better with age, but it is heavier. The catalog also has leather pouches.

A pouch for flights and travel abroad

When you travel, the pouch is where the passport, boarding pass, phone and money live. What matters here:

  • A separate pocket for the passport, so you are not hunting for it at the security check.
  • A zipper that closes all the way, and crossbody carry in front in markets and on public transport.
  • Enough capacity to leave room for the phone even when the passport is inside.

If you want more serious protection from pickpockets, take a look at the anti-theft shoulder bags.

What to check before you buy

  1. Dimensions against your phone: measure your phone with its case and compare it to the dimensions on the product page, so the zipper closes without effort.
  2. Compartments: how many there are, and whether there is a tablet pocket if you need one.
  3. Zipper: smooth opening and closing, ideally two-way on a large pouch.
  4. Strap: adjustable, and suited to the carry style you chose.
  5. Weight: from 110 g for a sports pouch to more than half a kilo for large models. If it is with you all day, every 100 g counts.

Which pouch for whom: a quick match by use

  • For the city and errands: a small pouch, about 1.5 liters, in canvas or fabric, on the waist or crossbody. Phone, wallet and keys, and that's it.
  • For work and the office: about 2 to 4 liters, water-resistant fabric, with a tablet pocket. It takes a charger, cables, an employee badge and a small notebook, and it looks neat in a meeting too.
  • For flights and trips abroad: a pouch with several compartments and a reliable zipper, worn crossbody in front.
  • For sports and running: as light as possible, flat and close to the body, in water-repellent fabric.
  • For evenings and events: a flat leather pouch that you can also carry in your hand.

As for color, black and dark gray go with almost everything and hide stains. Canvas in natural tones suits a more casual, summery style.

Pouch, shoulder bag or wallet?

If all you carry is cards and cash, a card wallet in your pocket may be enough. If you have a tablet of 10" or more, or a laptop, move up to a shoulder bag. The pouch sits in the middle: it frees your pockets and hands without feeling like you are carrying a bag. You can see all the models in the pouches category.

Frequently asked questions

What size pouch fits an iPad mini?

You need a pouch with a compartment that fits a tablet up to 7.9 inches, usually with a capacity of 2 liters or more. For example The Amp Quantum, with a dedicated inner pocket for an iPad mini, measuring 26×15×8 cm.

Waist pouch or crossbody pouch: which is safer abroad?

Crossbody on the chest, with the pouch in front and the zipper where you can see it. That way it is hard to open without you feeling it. On the waist it is more comfortable for movement, but turn it to the front in crowded places.

Can I wash a fabric pouch?

For most models the recommendation is to clean with a soft damp cloth and air dry. Cleaning instructions for each model are on its product page, and it is better not to put a pouch with metal parts or padding in the washing machine.

Does a water-resistant pouch protect my phone in the rain?

Water-resistant or water-repellent fabric protects from light rain and splashes, so the phone stays dry on the way from the car to the office. It is not designed to be submerged, so in heavy rain or near water put the phone in the inner pocket.

Is there a warranty on a pouch?

Yes. Bags of all kinds have a 12 month warranty on all components, such as zipper pulls, buckles and seams, unless the product page says otherwise.
