Vacuum Backpack: How Does It Work and How Much Space Does It Save?
October 26, 2026

A vacuum backpack has a sealed compartment with a valve. You pack soft clothes, close it and draw the air out with a pump. The clothes compress and free up space, up to about half their volume on our models, depending on the model and the fabrics. Two things to know up front: vacuum compression saves space, not weight, and it doesn't make the bag smaller on the outside, so your airline's carry-on limits still apply.
How does a vacuum backpack work?
Inside the bag there is a sealed compartment or bag with a valve. Fold shirts, pants, sweaters and towels into it, close the airtight zipper and attach a pump to the valve. The pump draws the air out and the clothes become a flat, compressed layer. Anything that doesn't compress, like shoes, chargers, a book or your laptop, goes in the backpack's other compartments.
The zipper on the sealed compartment is stiffer than a regular zipper, and that's on purpose: it has to keep the air out. Customers who got one of these bags have asked us more than once why the compartment doesn't open easily, and the answer is simply to pull firmly.
How much space does it really save?
Soft clothes hold most of the air in a bag, so that's where compression works best. A thick sweater, a hoodie or sweatpants lose a lot of their volume, T-shirts a bit less. On our models compression saves up to about half the volume of your clothes, and that's the difference between a bag that barely closes and a bag with room left for souvenirs on the way home.
- Compresses well: sweaters, hoodies, pajamas, towels, fabric pants.
- Compresses less: jeans, button-down shirts (fold them carefully so they don't wrinkle).
- Doesn't compress at all: shoes, toiletries, chargers and laptops. Those go in the other compartments.
Vacuum saves space, not weight
This is the most common mistake. The air that leaves the bag weighs almost nothing, so a compressed bag weighs exactly what it did before. If anything, with more room it's easy to pack more clothes and go over the weight limit without noticing.
For an overhead cabin bag, according to our airline table updated in September 2026, El Al allows 8 kg (about 17.6 lb), and Wizz Air and Ryanair allow 10 kg (about 22 lb). The backpack itself weighs 1.4 to 1.95 kg (about 3.1 to 4.3 lb) on our models, so it's worth weighing the full bag at home before you leave. Orion has a side handle with a built-in digital scale for exactly this. More on each airline's limits in our guide how much luggage may weigh on a flight.
Pump included, built in, or bring your own?
This is the key difference between the models, and it's worth checking before your flight, not the night before. The three vacuum backpacks in stock now:
| Model | Pump | Dimensions | Volume | Weight | Laptop |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orion 24L | Rechargeable pump included | 47.5×31×16 cm | 24 L, expandable | 1.85 kg | Up to 16 in |
| Korvinor Supreme 28L | Vacuum system built into the bag | 46×30.5×20 cm | 28 L, expandable | 1.95 kg | Up to 16 in |
| Electron 45L | Not included, you need a portable pump | 52×34×17 cm | 36 L, up to 45 L expanded | 1.4 kg | Up to 17 in |
Electron is the lightest and largest of the three, but it has no pump. Customers who found that out the day before their flight contacted us in a rush, so if you choose it, get a portable pump ahead of time. All the models are on the vacuum backpacks page, and every product page says whether a pump is included.
Does a vacuum backpack count as a carry-on?
Unexpanded, all three models fit the cabin bag sizes of most airlines. According to our table (September 2026): El Al allows a cabin bag up to 56×45×25 cm, Wizz Air up to 55×40×23 and Ryanair up to 55×40×20. Korvinor, at 20 cm deep, sits exactly on Ryanair's limit.
What doesn't fit: the free under-seat bag on low-cost airlines, limited to 40×30×20 cm on Wizz Air and Ryanair. In other words, a vacuum backpack replaces a cabin bag, not the small personal item. On the basic fare of those airlines the cabin bag costs extra, so factor that in when you compare flight prices. And remember the bag grows when expanded, so check again then. What else you can take into the cabin, in our guide what you can bring in your carry-on.
How to pack a vacuum bag right
- Fold or roll flat before compressing. A neatly folded garment comes out with hardly any wrinkles.
- Dry clothes only. A wet swimsuit or towel goes in a separate compartment; Orion has a wet and dry divider.
- Don't fill it to the brim. An airtight zipper forced shut won't seal well, and the air will come back.
- Keep the laptop out. On Korvinor the laptop compartment is on the side, so you can pull it out at security without opening the compressed clothes.
- Plan the trip home. Worn clothes compress just like clean ones, so the pump travels with you.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't
A vacuum backpack is great for anyone flying for a few days with a cabin bag only, for work trips with a laptop, and for anyone coming home with more than they left with. It suits you less if you fly with only the free under-seat bag, because it's bigger than that. And if you fly with a regular suitcase and just want to compress clothes, vacuum bags for luggage do the same job in any bag you already own.
And compared with a carry-on suitcase? A 20 inch carry-on holds more and rolls, while a backpack keeps your hands free and gives you a padded laptop compartment. You can also combine them: Orion and Electron have a trolley strap that slides over the suitcase handle, so the backpack rides on the suitcase all the way through the terminal.

Frequently asked questions
Do clothes wrinkle in vacuum compression?
Clothes that are neatly folded or rolled before compression come out with hardly any wrinkles. A button-down shirt or anything that creases easily is best folded carefully or packed in the backpack's regular compartment.
Can I use a vacuum backpack without a pump?
The sealed compartment works without pumping, but the clothes won't compress and you won't get the extra space. Orion includes a rechargeable pump, Korvinor has a built-in vacuum system, and for Electron you need to bring a portable pump of your own.
What's the difference between a vacuum backpack and vacuum bags?
In the backpack the sealed compartment is built into the bag, together with a padded laptop compartment and pockets. Vacuum bags are separate bags that go into any suitcase or bag you already have. If you fly with a cabin bag only, a vacuum backpack makes sense; with a large suitcase, bags usually do the job.
What laptop size fits in the vacuum backpacks?
Every model has a padded laptop compartment: up to 16 inches on Orion and Korvinor, and up to 17 inches on Electron. The laptop size is also in each model's name.
Why is the sealed compartment's zipper hard to open?
It's built to keep air out, so it's stiffer than a regular zipper. That's normal, not a defect: pull firmly and it opens. To keep it sealing well, don't overfill the compartment and make sure no sleeves get caught in it.
