How Many Suitcases Fit in a Skoda Octavia? The Math by Size

October 23, 2026

The trunk of a current-generation Skoda Octavia comfortably takes two large 28-inch suitcases and two carry-on trolleys under the cover, based on a volume calculation. Together they come to about 340 liters, and ADAC measured 505 liters under the cover in the Octavia wagon. The manufacturer states 600 liters for the hatchback and 640 liters for the wagon. Four large suitcases already mean loading above the cover.

How many liters does the Octavia trunk hold?

There are two numbers, and it is important to understand the difference. The manufacturer's number is the official volume. The ADAC number, from the German automobile club that tests cars and measures the trunk itself, is the volume you can actually fill under the cover.

VersionManufacturer volumeADAC measurement (wagon)
Octavia hatchback, from 2020600 litersNot measured in the test we read
Octavia wagon (Combi), from 2020640 liters, 1,700 with the rear seat folded505 liters under the cover, 715 to the roof
Previous-generation Octavia (2013 to 2020)590 liters hatchback, 610 wagonNot measured in the test we read

ADAC has two more useful figures: under the trunk floor, in the spare wheel well, there are about 40 more liters. And the trunk floor is adjustable: in the upper position there is no step at the opening, but you lose about 90 liters of volume. For a trip with suitcases, it is worth lowering it.

How many suitcases is that in practice? The math by size

The calculation here is by volume only, not a measurement we made in the car. We took the volumes of the Americano series from our catalog: 48 liters for the 20 inch, 98 liters for the 24, 121 liters for the 28 and 153 liters for the 32. A hard suitcase is a box, and not every liter of the trunk gets filled, so leave some margin.

What you loadApproximate volumeUnder the cover (505 liters)?
2 suitcases, 28 inchabout 242 litersYes, with room for bags
2 suitcases, 28 inch + 2 trolleys, 20 inchabout 338 litersYes, a typical family setup
4 suitcases, 24 inchabout 392 litersProbably yes, packed tightly
2 suitcases, 32 inch + 2 trolleys, 20 inchabout 402 litersDepends on the arrangement, the 32s are long
4 suitcases, 28 inchabout 484 litersToo close to the limit, expect to load above the cover

Put simply: a family of four with two large suitcases and two trolleys fits in an Octavia without folding a seat. A large suitcase for every member of the family already means removing the cover, and then it is important to secure the load (details below).

A 32-inch suitcase in an Octavia: what to know

The 32-inch suitcases in our catalog reach a height of 82 to 90 cm including wheels, and they are the size most worth checking in advance. Before you buy, measure the floor depth of your trunk, from the opening to the back of the rear seat, and compare it with the length of the suitcase. How to measure a suitcase correctly, including wheels and handle, is explained in our measuring guide, and if you are torn between sizes, the size guide goes through each one.

How to load properly before the drive to the airport

  • Heavy and large first, against the rear seat. The big suitcases go in first, lying down, against the seat back. That way they don't slide when you brake.
  • Floor in the lower position. That way you gain the roughly 90 liters ADAC found between the two positions.
  • Small items in the well. Shoes, a phone charger, a bag of snacks for the road: into the spare wheel well, not between the suitcases.
  • A soft bag fills the gaps. A backpack or soft travel bag squeezes into corners a hard suitcase can't reach.
  • Above the cover only with a net. ADAC recommends, when the rear seat is folded, loading only up to the window line for safety (875 liters in that configuration), and notes that the Octavia's cargo net is an optional extra. If you load high, it is worth having one.

Which suitcase works best for a car trip?

Two approaches work well. A set of soft expandable suitcases, such as Americano, gives a bit of flexibility: a soft suitcase that isn't fully expanded squeezes into a tight gap. A hard-shell set, such as Navigator, stacks neatly like boxes and protects the contents when another suitcase is placed on top. Either way, a 28 inch for each couple and a 20 inch carry-on trolley for each person is the combination that fits the Octavia most cleanly. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference in trunk space between the Octavia hatchback and wagon?

According to Skoda, the current generation has 600 liters in the hatchback and 640 liters in the wagon. The bigger difference is with the rear seat folded: the wagon reaches 1,700 liters according to the manufacturer.

How much fits with the rear seat folded?

ADAC measured 875 liters in the Octavia wagon when loading up to the window line, which is the height they recommend for safety. If you use all the space up to the roof behind the front seats, you get 1,475 liters.

How do I know whether a particular suitcase will fit in my trunk?

Measure three things: the floor depth from the opening to the seat back, the narrowest width between the wheel arches, and the height of the opening. Then compare them with the outer dimensions of the suitcase including wheels and handles, which are listed on the page of every suitcase we sell.

I have an older Octavia. Does that matter?

A little. For the previous generation, from 2013 to 2020, Skoda stated 590 liters for the hatchback and 610 liters for the wagon, about 10 to 30 liters less than the current generation. For two large suitcases and two trolleys it usually makes no difference.

Soft or hard suitcase for car trips?

Both work. A soft one squeezes into gaps a little, which helps when the trunk is full. A hard one stacks steadily and protects the contents when something is placed on it. If you also fly with the suitcases, choose by the flight and arrange the car around them.
