Family Cruise: How to Pack Suitcases for a Small Ship Cabin
October 23, 2026

On a family cruise, pack fewer suitcases, plus a small first-day bag for every member of the family. You hand your suitcases to the porters at the port, and they may reach your cabin only after the ship has already sailed. So swimsuits, medication, documents and a change of clothes stay with you. And because most cruises start with a flight, the size of each suitcase is set by the airline's rules.
Why everyone is talking about family cruises
Israel Hayom recently published the five cruise lines it recommends for families, with ships that look like floating theme parks. If you are already choosing between cruise lines, think about the practical question too: how do four or five people, with a week's worth of clothes, fit into one cabin?
What happens to your luggage on embarkation day
This is how it works at Royal Caribbean, according to the FAQ on the company's website, and it is similar at other large cruise lines:
- Every suitcase gets a ship luggage tag with your cabin number. You receive it with your cruise documents, and if you forgot it, the porters at the port can give you one.
- You hand your suitcases to the porters at the terminal, and because of the volume they may reach your cabin only after sailing.
- Travel documents and medication stay in the bag that boards with you, with medication in its original labeled packaging.
- The company asks for a reasonable amount of luggage and recommends not overdoing the number of items.
If your cruise starts right after a flight, we also wrote about what to carry with you when you fly straight to a cruise.
The first-day bag: one for everyone, kids included
A small backpack or carry-on for every member of the family, with:
- Passports, cruise cards and insurance documents (with one of the parents).
- Medication for a few days, in its original packaging.
- Swimsuit, hat and sunscreen, because the pool is open before your suitcases arrive.
- A change of clothes for the first evening.
- Chargers, and a game or book for the kids for the hours of waiting at the port.
If you fly to the port of departure, the same bag can serve as your carry-on for the flight, so you don't pack twice.
How many suitcases, and what size
A ship cabin is usually smaller than a hotel room, and an open suitcase on the floor takes up half of it. So fewer, larger suitcases are better than many small ones: one medium or large suitcase for every two people, and a carry-on for each person. Once you unpack, nest the empty suitcases inside each other and store them as far out of the way as you can.
Before choosing a size, check what is allowed on the flight to the port. A standard checked suitcase is usually limited to 23 kg and to 158 cm in total dimensions, which is why many families choose a set of two or three suitcases in different sizes. The table above compares the sets we have right now, and in our guide how to choose a suitcase set for the family we explain what suits how many travelers.
School-age kids can roll their own small carry-on or carry a backpack with their first-day things. That way the parents aren't hauling five bags through the port, and the kids know what is theirs. You'll find ideas for the right bag in our guide travel bags for kids.
How to keep the cabin organized for a whole week
- One cube per child, each in a different color. Everyone knows where their clothes are, and nobody turns a whole suitcase upside down to find socks. Packing cubes also fit in the cabin drawers.
- A toiletry bag that hangs on the door or a hook, because the counter by the sink in a cabin bathroom is tiny.
- A laundry bag from day one. At the end of the week you can compress it in a vacuum bag so it fits back in the suitcase.
- Evening wear: if your cruise has a formal night, check the dress code in advance and pack one outfit per person, not three.
- Room for shopping. Leave one suitcase half empty for the way home, especially if the ship stops at several ports.
The last night: suitcases leave the cabin before bedtime
At the end of the cruise, too, your suitcases don't stay with you. At Royal Caribbean, for example, you place your large suitcases outside the cabin on the last evening, usually by 11 pm, with tags your cabin steward leaves. The crew collects them overnight, and they are waiting for you on shore in the morning. If you'd rather disembark with your luggage, you can keep it in the cabin and carry it off yourself, without tags.
So the first-day bag goes back to work on the last night: pajamas, clothes for the morning, toothbrush, medication, chargers, passports and your cruise card. Pack it before you put the suitcases out, because once they leave the cabin, whatever is left inside is all you have until you land.

Frequently asked questions
When does luggage reach the cabin on a cruise?
On embarkation day you hand your suitcases to the porters at the port, and they reach your cabin later in the day, sometimes only after the ship has sailed. That's why everyone should keep a small bag with what they need for the first few hours.
How many suitcases can you take on a cruise?
Cruise lines ask for a reasonable amount and recommend limiting the number of items. In practice, the limit that matters is usually the airline's that flies you to the port, so first check how many suitcases your flight ticket includes.
Hard-shell or soft suitcase for a cruise?
Both work. A fabric suitcase weighs less and squeezes a little, which helps in a small cabin. A hard-shell protects fragile things better and is easy to close when you come back with shopping.
Where should you keep medication on a cruise?
In the bag that boards the ship with you, in the original labeled packaging, as cruise lines ask. That way it's with you even if your suitcase reaches the cabin late.
