How to Pack Shoes in a Suitcase Without Getting Dirt on Clothes or Crushing Them

October 23, 2026

Pack each pair of shoes in a separate bag or pouch, place them at the bottom of the suitcase on the wheel side and along the sides, and stuff them with socks or cables so they keep their shape. Wear your heaviest pair on the flight, and for a week two or three pairs are usually enough. That way your clothes stay clean and the suitcase stays balanced.

Where do the shoes go in the suitcase?

The first rule: shoes go at the bottom, on the wheel side. When the suitcase stands or is pulled along, the heavy items sit there instead of crushing the clothes, and the suitcase does not tip forward.

  • Along the sides: place the shoes along the sides of the suitcase with the soles facing the wall. The center stays free for rolled clothes or packing cubes.
  • Heel to toe: a pair fits best when one shoe is turned the opposite way to the other, heel next to toe. That way they take up less width.
  • Between the rails in a hard shell suitcase: in many hard shell suitcases the bottom is not flat, because the telescopic handle mechanism runs there. The gaps between the rails are exactly the place for flat shoes or flip-flops.

If you want to see how this fits into the rest of your packing, our complete packing guide has an order of work for the whole suitcase.

How to keep clothes from getting dirty

Even shoes that look clean bring sand, dust and bits of the street with them. Three simple steps solve it:

  1. Clean the soles before packing. A damp cloth on the sole does most of the work.
  2. Each pair in its own bag. A fabric shoe bag, a pouch from a set of packing cubes, or as a last resort a hotel shower cap stretched over the sole.
  3. White clothes far from the shoes. Light shirts go into a separate cube on the other side of the suitcase.

Closed zippered pouches are better than plastic bags: they do not tear, they hold the shoes in place and you can use them again and again, including for dirty laundry on the way home.

How to keep shoes from getting crushed

An empty shoe is a pocket of air that gets crushed the moment you close the suitcase. Fill it, and two good things happen: it keeps its shape, and you gain space.

  • Socks and underwear, rolled, fit inside shoes easily.
  • Chargers and cables inside a shoe are protected from pressure. Just put them in a small bag first.
  • A belt, rolled, fits along the inner wall of the shoe.
  • Small toiletry bottles in a sealed bag, if there is nowhere else. A shoe makes good padding.

For leather or designer shoes that you do not want creased, put paper or socks in the front part, and do not place anything heavy on them.

How many pairs to take for a week?

Shoes are among the heaviest items in a suitcase, and every unnecessary pair brings you closer to the weight limit. On most airlines a standard checked suitcase is limited to 23 kg, and an El Al carry-on is limited to 8 kg. For a regular week of vacation this is enough:

  • A comfortable walking pair, which you wear on the flight itself.
  • A second pair for the evening or going out.
  • Flip-flops or sandals, if the destination is warm or there is a pool.

Flying with a carry-on only? Then the rule matters even more: the heavy pair on your feet, and just one light pair in the bag. More tips for traveling with cabin baggage only are in our guide how to pack a carry-on for a week, and we summarized all the weight limits in our guide to the baggage weight allowance.

Tips by type of shoe

TypeHow to pack
SneakersStuff with socks, each pair in a pouch, along the side at the wheel end.
White shoesA sealed bag, and not next to dark shoes. That way they do not pick up stains.
HeelsHeels toward the side and inside a sock, so they do not tear the fabric or scratch other shoes.
Boots and hiking shoesWear them on the flight. If you must pack them, lay them along the bottom of the suitcase.
Flip-flops and sandalsFlat, so they fit into gaps at the bottom or between clothes.

And on the way home: wet or dirty shoes

After a beach holiday, rain or a hike, shoes come back wet, with sand or mud. Before packing:

  • Clean off the sand or mud as much as possible, even if only at the hotel tap.
  • Stuff the shoes with newspaper or paper towels to absorb the moisture.
  • Pack them in a sealed bag or a water-resistant pouch, separate from clean clothes.
  • At home, take them out of the suitcase right away and let them air dry.

If the trip home always ends with a suitcase that will not close, the problem may not be the shoes but the packing as a whole. Our guide how to save space in a suitcase has more ways to free up room, and in our organizers category you will find pouches made for exactly this.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put shoes in my hand luggage on the plane?

Yes, there is no ban on shoes in cabin baggage. Just remember they are weighed together with the whole bag, so it is better to wear the heavy pair and pack only a light pair in the bag.

What can I wrap shoes in if I do not have a shoe bag?

A hotel shower cap stretched over the sole, a fabric bag, or a pouch from a set of packing cubes. A regular plastic bag works for one trip, but tears easily.

How do I keep shoes from making the suitcase smell?

Let them dry completely before packing and pack them in a closed pouch, away from your clothes. Used socks do not go inside the shoes on the way home, they go in the laundry bag.

Where is the safest place for high heels?

At the bottom of the suitcase, with the heels facing the side and wrapped in a sock. That way the heel does not tear the lining or leave marks on other shoes or clothes.
