Ryanair Closes Bag Drop an Hour Before Departure: What About Your Trolley?

November 1, 20263 min read

From Tuesday, November 10, 2026, Ryanair bag drop at every airport closes 60 minutes before departure instead of 40. If you check a bag, you need to reach the desk 20 minutes earlier. If you checked in online and fly with cabin bags only, nothing changes for you.

Which of our suitcases fits Ryanair’s cabin?

Going by each suitcase’s outer size, wheels and handles included. Pick an airline to see what goes in the cabin with you.

Ryanair: overhead bin up to 55×40×20 cm, up to 10 kg. Free personal item under the seat up to 40×30×20 cm. On the basic fare the trolley costs extra.

Airline rules checked in September 2026. Airlines update them now and then, so check the airline’s site before you fly.

What exactly is changing?

Ryanair announced the change in April and repeated it at the end of October. The airline says the extra 20 minutes give passengers who check a bag more time for security and passport control, especially at busy times, and should reduce missed flights. Bag sizes and weights are not part of this change.

Example: a flight leaving at 10:00

WhatUntil nowFrom November 10
Bag drop closes09:2009:00
Gate closes09:3009:30

Look at what happens here. Until now there were only 10 minutes between bag drop closing and the gate closing, and security and passports had to fit in them. Now there is half an hour. If you arrive early you will barely notice. If you are used to running at the last minute, you will notice right away.

Who is affected and who is not?

PassengerWhat changes
Checks a bag at the airportMust drop it at least 60 minutes before departure
Checked in online, no checked bagNothing, straight to security

Ryanair says about 20% of its passengers check a bag, so the other 80% are not affected. Miss the deadline and you may be refused boarding, with no refund.

How early should you get to the airport?

Ryanair gives no new number; it just asks you to arrive in good time and drop your bag at least an hour before departure. Plan back from that time, not from the departure time: add the walk to the desk and the queue itself. At busy airports and peak hours the queue is the part you cannot predict, so leave room for it.

One place the change really bites is a self-made connection. If you land in one European city and continue on a separate Ryanair ticket, with a bag to collect and drop again, your spare time just shrank by 20 minutes. Check your schedule again and, if needed, consider flying with cabin bags only.

When does it pay to skip the checked bag?

For a short trip, flying with cabin bags saves both the queue and the bag fee. Under Ryanair's policy:

  • Free small bag: up to 40×30×20 cm, under the seat.
  • Paid trolley: up to 55×40×20 cm and 10 kg, added to your booking.

These sizes include wheels and handles, and the 20 cm depth is where many suitcases fail. Our Ryanair baggage guide has all the sizes and fines, and here is how to get through low-cost rules without fines.

Before you give up the checked bag, three short questions:

  • How many days? For a long weekend a trolley is enough for most people. For a winter week with a coat and sweaters it gets harder. Wear the heavy item on the flight to save space.
  • Planning to shop? You will need room on the way back, and a trolley packed full on the way out will be a problem.
  • Carrying large liquids? Cabin liquid rules apply, so whatever does not meet them stays home or gets bought at your destination.

What fits Ryanair's sizes?

  • Americano 20 inch: 55×35×20 cm, 2.5 kg. It fits the trolley size as it is, with the expansion closed.
  • Cosmos DLX 20 inch: 55×35×20 cm and 2.5 kg. Opening the expansion takes the depth to 23 cm, which is over the limit.
  • The Lopez backpack: 37×28×12 cm, within the small bag size. Good for a work day or a very short trip, and it holds a 14 inch laptop.

A short checklist for Ryanair passengers

  1. Check in online before you leave home.
  2. Checking a bag? Aim to be at the desk well before the one-hour mark, not right on it.
  3. Measure your bag or trolley at home, wheels included.
  4. On a self-made connection, check the time between flights again.
  5. Flying as a group or with children? Drop your bags together and start earlier: several bags take longer than one.
  6. Photograph your suitcase before dropping it and keep the bag tag. If it arrives damaged, this helps with the damage report to the airline.

Does the change apply at every airport?

Yes. According to the airline, from November 10, 2026, bag drop closes 60 minutes before departure at all Ryanair airports.

I only have a trolley. Does anything change for me?

If you checked in online and have no bag to drop, you are not affected and can go straight to security. Trolley sizes and weights did not change with this announcement.

What if I reach the desk after it closes?

You may be refused boarding, with no refund. So aim to reach the desk well before the last moment.

Why is Ryanair doing this?

The airline says the extra 20 minutes give passengers who check a bag more time for security and passport control and to reach the gate on time, especially at busy times.
