Aluminum Suitcases

Polycarbonate is flexible: it bends on impact and springs back. Aluminum does not flex, so it protects what is inside even under heavy pressure, but a hard knock can leave a dent, and over time it collects small scratches that many travelers see as part of the case's character. An aluminum suitcase suits people who fly with sensitive gear, like cameras or computers, and anyone who loves the professional look of metal.

The first thing to break on a suitcase is a wheel, and on a metal case that is a shame, because the shell is good for years. On Monaco each of the four spinner wheels releases with a press on the metal button at its base, and two spare wheels come in the box, so you swap a wheel at home without tools. The shell, frame and handle are aluminum magnesium alloy, the case closes with a frame and two latches instead of a zipper, and it has two TSA locks. The 20 inch measures 51 × 34 × 20 cm including wheels, weighs 3.2 kg and holds 35 liters for the cabin. The larger sizes: 24 inch 58 liters, 26 inch 70 liters, 28 inch 91 liters and 30 inch 100 liters. Colors: pearl silver, crystal black, dark green, iron gray, red and champagne gold.

Premier 20 is a cabin case in standard carry-on dimensions for most airlines, with 35 liters and an organized interior with a divider and straps. Premier 29 is a large 100 liter checked case with double spinner wheels, an integrated locking system with combination locks, a divider, compression straps and a reinforced aluminum telescopic handle. For a short trip the 20 is enough, for a week or longer the 29, and frequent flyers will enjoy both.

Wipe the shell with a soft damp cloth, never with abrasive cleaners or steel wool. Dry it after rain, and store it in a fabric cover or bag between trips to limit scratches. Light scratches are part of using a metal case and do not reduce the protection it gives.
