Luggage Set or Single Suitcases: Which Is Better Value?
November 8, 20264 min read
A luggage set is good value when you'll actually use every suitcase in it: several travelers, a few trips a year in different combinations, and room at home to store it. If you fly alone or as a couple once or twice a year, two single suitcases in exactly the sizes you need are usually the better buy. Here is how to decide before Black Friday.

How much a set saves, and when the saving is real
On November 8, 2026 we compared three sets of 3 suitcases (20, 24 and 28 inch) on our store: Navigator, Swiss System and Cosmos DLX. In each one, the set cost less than buying the same three suitcases separately. Current prices are in the table above.
That saving only counts if you need all three. A 28 inch suitcase that sits in the closet for two years isn't a saving, it's money you paid in advance. So the fair comparison is the set price against the suitcases you'll really take on your trips, in the same model. Most of our models are sold as single suitcases too, and some as pairs, so the comparison is easy.
When a set is the right choice
- You're a family of three or more, and at least two large suitcases go on every vacation.
- You fly a few times a year, each time with a different mix: a weekend with a carry-on, a week with a 24, a long trip with a 28.
- You want matching suitcases, so you spot yours on the carousel right away.
- You have storage space. In the Swiss System set, for example, the suitcases nest inside each other for storage.
When single suitcases are the better buy
If you fly alone, or mostly on low-cost airlines with a carry-on only, a set of three will spend most of the year in the attic. Same if you already own a good large suitcase: you only need a carry-on, and there's no reason to buy again what you already have.
The set of 4 is worth a second thought too. A 32 inch suitcase is the biggest size, and every 32 inch we sell goes over the 158 cm (length plus width plus height) that many airlines set for a standard checked bag, so an oversize fee is possible. It also fills up past 23 kg, the common weight limit, very quickly. For a family that packs everything into one suitcase it's great. For a couple, a 24 and a 28 are usually enough.
Which mix suits you
| Who's flying | A mix that works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One traveler, short trips | A single 20 inch carry-on | Comes on the plane with you, nothing to store |
| A couple, a week abroad | A pair: 20 + 24 | The carry-on for the flight, the 24 for clothes |
| A couple, two weeks or more | A pair: 24 + 28 | Two checked bags without wasted space |
| A family with kids | Set of 3: 20 + 24 + 28 | Every trip uses at least two of them |
| A big family or a relocation | Set of 4 with a 32 | The most space, but watch the weight and size |
Not sure how to split clothes between the carry-on and the big suitcase? We have a separate guide: what goes in the carry-on and what goes in the big suitcase.
Already own a suitcase? Add to it, don't replace it
Many people start looking at sets because one suitcase at home broke. Before buying three new ones, check the rest. If you have a 28 that still works, a 20 and 24 pair completes it, and if only the carry-on is missing, one carry-on is enough. And if the old suitcase broke on a flight, don't throw it out yet: a damage report from the airline may cover it. We wrote about that in does the warranty cover flight damage, and what a damage report is.
The weight of each suitcase in the set
This is the detail people forget most when buying a set. Whatever the suitcase weighs empty comes off your baggage allowance on every flight. In the Swiss System set the weights are 2.2, 2.6, 3.0 and 3.8 kg for the 20, 24, 28 and 32 inch. In the Navigator they're 2.5, 3.5, 4.3 and 4.9 kg, and here the hard shell comes with a 10-year warranty on the base. So that's the choice: light fabric, or a hard shell that lasts for years. We cover the hard versus soft question for sets in our guide to hard-shell luggage sets for families.
Before you buy on sale
On Black Friday and in other sales, check that each sale has its own end date, shown on the sales page. The warranty on a suitcase bought on sale is the same as at full price.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy only part of a set?
Yes. Most of our models are sold as single suitcases, and Navigator, Cosmos DLX and Primo 2.0 come in pairs too. Navigator, for example, has a pair for every combination of two sizes.
Is the warranty on a set different from a single suitcase?
No. Every suitcase in a set gets the same warranty as a single one: 12 months on the wheels, handles, the telescopic handle mechanism and zipper pulls. Hard polypropylene suitcases like the Navigator also get a 10-year warranty on the base.
Is a set of 4 with a 32 inch suitcase OK for flying?
Yes, but watch two things. Every 32 inch we sell goes over the 158 cm many airlines set for a standard bag, and a suitcase of 120 liters or more passes 23 kg easily. Check your airline's rules before you pack it full.
How do I store a set at home without it taking over a room?
Check on the product page whether the suitcases nest inside each other. In the Swiss System sets they do.
