A water-resistant laptop bag keeps your computer dry in rain and splashes on the way to work. Most bags on this page are made of water-repellent fabrics: Oxford, Cordura nylon, high-density canvas and neoprene, plus water-repellent leather and PU leather. The difference matters: water-repellent protects against light rain and splashes, and a bag rated waterproof, like The Exceptional Pro, protects more. None of them is meant to be submerged. You'll find shoulder bags, business bags, backpacks and sleeves for 7 to 17.3 inch laptops.
Water-repellent or waterproof: what's the difference
Water-repellent fabric is coated so water beads off instead of soaking in, which is enough for most rainy commutes. The Flawless Pro and Revis Pro use water-repellent Oxford fabric, and the Apocalypse adds a water-repellent PU coating. Bags rated waterproof, like the Oxford fabric The Exceptional Pro, offer more protection. Even in a resistant bag, water can get in through an open zipper, so close every zipper in the rain.
Oxford, nylon, canvas or neoprene
Oxford fabric is dense and durable, and The Fusion Pro, for example, is made of it. Cordura nylon is especially light: the Cosmos Elite and Strider Ultra weigh 300 g. High-density canvas, like on the Wingate and The Tsunami Pro Side, gives a classic look and stands up to rain. Neoprene, like on the Citrate, The Diamond and NISCO, is flexible and shock-absorbing, which is why it's common in sleeves.
A water-resistant sleeve inside the bag
A second layer of protection is a water-repellent sleeve inside the bag. The Citrate is three-layer neoprene: a water-repellent outer layer, shock-absorbing padding and a soft lining. The NISCO repels splashes, comes in 13 sizes from 7 to 17 inches and doubles as a mouse pad. If your bag gets wet, take the laptop out, open the zippers and let it dry at room temperature, not on a heater.
Frequently asked questions
Does a water-resistant laptop bag protect in the rain?
Yes, from light rain and splashes. The fabric repels water and the laptop stays dry in its padded compartment. In heavy, prolonged rain, close all the zippers, and if you walk outside a lot, add a sleeve inside the bag.
What's the difference between water-repellent and waterproof?
Water-repellent means the fabric is coated to keep water from soaking in during light rain. Waterproof describes a higher level of protection, and The Exceptional Pro, for example, is made of waterproof Oxford fabric. Neither is designed to be submerged.
Is there a water-resistant laptop sleeve?
Yes. The Citrate is neoprene with a water-repellent outer layer, the NISCO repels splashes, and the Revis Pro and Apocalypse are water-repellent Oxford fabric. The Mauve Pro is microfiber leather that resists water and stains.
Is there a water-resistant laptop shoulder bag?
Yes. The Tsunami Pro Side and BONANZA Pro 2.0 are made of water-resistant high-density canvas, the Wingate stands up to rain, and the Glacior Prime is light, water-repellent nylon.
Is there a water-resistant leather business bag?
Yes. The Vanilla is water-repellent Crazy Horse leather, and the Genesis Pro is water-repellent PU leather. Leather handles light rain, and if it gets wet, wipe it and let it dry at room temperature.
Is there a water-resistant laptop backpack?
Yes. The Vintage Pro is a leather backpack that resists water and shocks, for laptops up to 16 inches. The Insert Pro is water-resistant polyester with a breathable back system, for laptops up to 15.6 inches.
