A good leather wallet gets better with time: the leather softens, gains character and lasts for years. This page has two main kinds of genuine leather: soft, smooth nappa leather, as on Mattia, Venezia and Germen, and crazy horse leather with a vintage finish, as on Oryvenis, Syltrax and Kavorion Slim. Alongside them there are wallets in PU leather, microfiber leather and vegan fabric, and each model's page says which. When choosing, check how many card slots you need, from 6 to 17, whether you want a coin pocket or a zipper, and whether RFID blocking matters to you, which stops contactless cards from being read wirelessly.
Nappa leather or crazy horse leather?
Nappa leather is soft and supple to the touch and suits a classic bifold with lots of slots, like Torino with 17 card slots. Crazy horse leather has a vintage look that improves with use, as on Raltheron Turbo, a slim 30 g (1 oz) wallet with room for up to 10 cards. If you like a smooth, clean look, choose nappa. If you like leather with character, choose vintage-finish crazy horse. The leather type is listed on each model's page.
Slots, zippers and coins
A zip-around wallet, like Oryvenis and Syltrax, keeps everything inside, and the 21 cm (8.3 in) long Oryvenis suits travel too. Mattia and Venezia have a coin pocket with a snap closure, and Marco's coin pocket closes with a zipper. If you only carry cards and folded bills, a slim wallet like Fanatic or The Fantastic Pro is enough, with 8 card slots and a slot for folded bills.
Caring for a leather wallet
Wipe off dust and dirt with a soft dry cloth. If your wallet gets wet, let it air-dry away from heaters and direct sun. Every few months apply a thin layer of leather conditioner so the leather doesn't dry out and crack. And don't stuff in more cards than there are slots, so the leather doesn't stretch.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know a wallet is genuine leather?
Genuine leather has pores and an uneven grain and feels warm and soft. PU leather is more uniform and smooth. Each model's page lists what it's made of: nappa leather, crazy horse leather, PU leather or microfiber leather.
What does genuine leather mean on a wallet?
Genuine leather means real, natural leather rather than a synthetic material. On genuine leather wallets, like Skorionyx Elite in crazy horse leather or The Fantastic Pro, the leather softens and gains character with use.
Is there a leather wallet that pops up cards?
Yes. Slide combines genuine leather and aluminum and pops up to 7 cards at the push of a button, and Finder, in genuine leather, has a spring card mechanism plus a dedicated AirTag slot and bill compartments.
Are there leather wallets for men and women?
Yes. Venezia has a classic men's design, and the compact Dynorik Quantum and the slim The Classic Popup suit women too.
Is a leather wallet a good gift?
Yes, most leather wallets come in a gift box. A classic nappa leather wallet, like Mattia or Germen, suits someone who carries a lot, and a slim crazy horse wallet, like Kavorion Slim, suits someone who carries little.
