An orthopedic school backpack is built to carry a full school day without loading the shoulders: a padded back panel that sits against the back, two wide padded straps that adjust to the child's height, and a large main compartment where the heavy books sit close to the back. On this page you'll find school backpacks for kids and teens, some with a padded laptop sleeve for middle and high school, in designs and colors kids actually want to carry.
What makes a school backpack orthopedic?
Three things. A padded back that sits against the back and spreads the weight over all of it, wide padded shoulder straps that don't dig in, and straps that adjust so the bag sits high and centered instead of swinging below the waist. A breathable air-mesh back also helps on hot days. Any backpack only helps when it is carried right: on both shoulders, not one.
Choosing the size by age
The bag should fit the child's back: from the shoulders to just above the waist, no wider than the back. Younger kids need a small, light bag; upper grades, middle and high school need 30 to 35 liters for books, notebooks, a lunch box and a bottle. The Celeste, for example, is 47 x 35 x 15 cm (about 18.5 x 13.8 x 5.9 in) and 35 liters with a sleeve for laptops up to 16 inches, a fit for upper grades and teens. It's best to try the bag on the child and set the straps together.
How to pack a school backpack
Put the heavy books and binders in the main compartment, closest to the back, and the pencil case, keys and small items in the front pocket. The water bottle goes in a side pocket so it comes out without taking the bag off. Go through the bag with your child once a week and take out what isn't needed: old notebooks and forgotten papers add weight for nothing.
Frequently asked questions
From what age is an orthopedic school backpack right?
At any age a child carries books every day. What changes is the size: a small bag for the lower grades, and 30 to 35 liters for upper grades, middle and high school.
How should the straps be set?
Set both straps so the bag sits high and centered on the back, its bottom just above the waist. The bag shouldn't swing as the child walks.
Is there a school backpack with room for a laptop?
Yes. The Celeste has a padded sleeve for laptops up to 16 inches (15.6 inch screen) or a tablet, a fit for middle school, high school and college.
Does the same backpack work for adults?
A 35 liter backpack with a padded back works for teens, students and adults too, for work and day trips. That's why the Celeste also comes in a plain camel tan alongside the prints for kids.
How do I clean a school backpack?
Wipe it with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, and empty out crumbs and wrappers once a week. Don't put it in the washing machine.
