Travel and hiking call for two different kinds of backpack. For flights and business trips you want 15 to 35 liters, with a padded laptop compartment, a strap that slides over your suitcase handle and dimensions that fit in the cabin. For a trek or a trip of several days you want a large pack like the Slayer 80L, with hip and chest straps to spread the weight, a rain cover and attachment points for a tent and sleeping bag. This page has both kinds, most in water-repellent fabric.
A backpack for flying: what to check
First, the dimensions. Airlines measure the bag from the outside, and each airline has its own limits for a personal item under the seat and for carry-on. The Reel and Ochocinco Pro work as carry-on bags, and Ochocinco Pro weighs just 550 g (1.2 lb). Then comfort at the airport: The Satin Ultimate Max, Multi Pro and Epic Deluxe Commute have a strap that slides over your suitcase handle, so the bag rides on the suitcase instead of your back.
Packs for treks and long hikes
On a multi-day trip the pack is heavy, so the back system matters most. Slayer 80L has aluminum stays in the back, adjustable hip and chest straps, a rain cover, tie points for a tent and sleeping bag and a bottom opening for the sleeping bag. Trekker 65 comes with lumbar support, side bottle pockets and a plastic base guard. XL Mountaineer is made of 1680D ballistic nylon, with shoulder, chest and hip straps and mesh bottle pockets.
How many liters do you need?
For a day in the city or a short flight with a laptop, 15 to 25 liters is enough, like The Royal 15L or Hoot Pro 25L with an external USB port. For a trip of a few days with clothes, a laptop and a charger, go for 30 to 35 liters, like the 30 liter Optimus Pro or the 35 liter SmartPack DLX. For a multi-day trek, pick a large pack like Slayer 80L or the 65 liter Trekker 65. Choose for the trip you take most often, not the rare one.
Frequently asked questions
Which backpack works as carry-on?
One whose outside dimensions meet your airline's limits. On this page, The Reel, Ochocinco Pro and The Satin Ultimate Max work as carry-on. On fares that allow only a personal item under the seat, choose a smaller bag and check its dimensions.
What's the difference between a hiking backpack and a travel backpack?
A travel backpack is built for a laptop, documents and the airport: a padded compartment, organized pockets and a luggage strap. A hiking pack is built for the outdoors: large volume, hip and chest straps, bottle pockets and sometimes a rain cover, like the Slayer 80L, which comes with its own.
Is there a 35 liter travel backpack?
Yes. The 35 liter SmartPack DLX has a compartment for laptops up to 15.6 inches and a USB port, and the 35 liter Orogeny has a padded compartment for laptops up to 16 inches. Both are made of water-repellent fabric.
Is there a backpack with a rain cover?
Yes. Slayer 80L comes with its own rain cover, and The Xavier Pro has a built-in rain cover. Most of the other backpacks are made of water-repellent fabric that handles light rain.
