A suitcase with an aluminum frame closes with two clasps on a metal frame around the opening, not with a zipper. The zipper is the first part to tear when you fill a case to the top, and a common zipper can be opened with a pen and closed again without a trace. A frame has nothing to tear and no teeth to split. Every suitcase on this page closes on an aluminum frame.
Frame or zipper: what changes in use?
With a zipper you can squeeze in one more shirt, and some cases add an expansion zipper. A frame doesn't expand: what fits, fits, but the lid always closes the same way and the opening never stretches. There is also no zipper seam for rain to get through, and the case opens and closes with a press of the clasps. If you always pack a bit too much, an expandable zipped case suits you. If you want a case that lasts for years and never opens on the way, pick a frame.
Polycarbonate shell or full aluminum?
A polycarbonate (PC) shell can close on an aluminum frame too. PC is lighter, flexes under a knock and springs back, and comes in many colors, like the Siracusa and Taormina. Full aluminum, like the Monaco, is heavier and dearer, doesn't crack, and picks up small scratches and dents over the years that become part of its look.
What else to check before you choose
The weight, since a metal frame adds a little: the Siracusa 20 inch weighs 3.5 kg and the Taormina 28 inch 6.2 kg. The wheels, where big and quiet is better, and the lock: a TSA lock opens at security with the approved key without being broken. And for a carry-on, check the height including wheels against your airline's limit.
Frequently asked questions
Can a zipperless suitcase open by itself?
No. The clasps lock onto the frame and you press them to open. Some models, like the Taormina and Monaco, also have a TSA lock on the frame.
Are there zippers inside?
Yes, on the dividers inside, so your clothes stay in place. There is no zipper outside.
Can a frame suitcase expand?
No. A frame suitcase doesn't expand, so choose the size for your longest trip.
Does an aluminum frame add a lot of weight?
A little. The Siracusa 20 inch weighs 3.5 kg and the 26 inch 4.9 kg, normal for hardside cases of those sizes.
Is there a frame suitcase with a cup holder?
Yes, the Taormina: a hidden cup holder, an aluminum frame with no zipper and jumbo wheels, in 20 and 28 inch and as a set of both.
